Should You Turn Your AC Off While You’re On Vacation?

Summer vacation is all about relaxing but before you head out, don’t forget about your home’s air conditioning system.

One of the most common questions we hear this time of year is, “Should I turn my AC off while I’m away?” While it might seem like the best way to save money, the answer is usually no.

Don’t Turn It Off Completely

Instead of shutting your air conditioner off, raise your thermostat a few degrees before you leave. This helps your home stay at a reasonable temperature while also keeping humidity under control.

A good rule of thumb is:

  • Weekend trip: Set your thermostat around 80–82°F
  • A week or longer: 82–85°F is usually a good range

Your system won’t run nearly as often, but it’ll still help protect your home while you’re away.

It’s Not Just About Staying Cool

Your air conditioner does more than cool your home, it also removes moisture from the air.

If your AC stays off for several days during a hot, humid Pennsylvania summer, your home can start to feel damp. That extra humidity can lead to musty smells, condensation around windows, and in some cases even mold or mildew.

Keeping your thermostat set a little higher lets your AC run just enough to help control that moisture.

Cranking the Thermostat Down Doesn’t Help

A lot of homeowners think setting the thermostat to 68°F before leaving will keep the house cooler longer.

Your system cools at the same rate no matter what temperature you choose. Setting it lower just makes it run longer before you leave, which uses more energy without giving you any extra benefit.

A Few Things to Do Before You Leave

Before heading out, take a few minutes to make sure your system is ready.

  • Replace your air filter if it’s dirty.
  • Clear away leaves, weeds, or debris from around your outdoor unit.
  • Close your blinds or curtains to keep the sun from heating up your home.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are completely shut.
  • If you have a smart thermostat, switch it to vacation mode or adjust it from your phone.

These simple steps can help your system run more efficiently while you’re away.

When You Get Home

Once you’re back, set your thermostat to whatever temperature you normally keep your home. There’s no need to drop it way down to cool the house faster, your AC will cool at the same pace either way.

If your system seems to be struggling once you’re home, or it’s been a while since your last maintenance visit, it may be time to have it checked out.
